Images of prototype and planning

Prototype made

19/07/23 - Since my last post I have been working on a prototype for the embroidered element of my project. I will post some images of the prototype but for now I will tell you what I have learnt.

Modifications I would make based on prototype

  • I decided to add the years of her birth and death about halfway through the embroidery. I put them above her name but in hindsight I would have the woman's name at the very top and the dates underneath.
  • I needed to spend more time planning out where each piece of embroidery needs to go and how much space it should take up as the prototype has some empty spaces that I don't like.
  • Still need to work out a way to transfer the design onto the fabric for this one I just drew it on with pencil and tracing paper but this faded too quickly and so the boat ended up looking a bit off and the coral and algae was totally freehand. Will try some transfer pens when at grandparents.
  • Initially wasn't going to have a border but after having tried it I think it works. Planning to have all the borders the same colour so it doesn't ruin the cohesiveness of the piece as a whole.
  • Need to plan out the colours when I do the designs (for this one I just used what I had on hand)
  • When I asked people what they thought the coral was most said flowers so need to redesign that. It would probably be a good idea to try all the elements beforehand.
The actual final embroideries will be bigger than this one.
